This is a new collection of solo pieces with piano accompaniments for use at festival-adjudicated events or in recitals. These solos are written by two of the most popular composers of music for students: Larry Clark and Sean OLoughlin. The solos range in difficulty from grades 1 to 2 and are progressively arranged in the book. There is a wide variety of musical styles from original compositions to beautiful arrangements of folk songs and classical pieces. The download contains full version recordings for the student to use as examples, as well as piano-only recordings to use in practice. As an added bonus, the piano accompaniments as printable PDF files are also included, so that the student can print the solo they need for the accompanist. This collection of solos is destined to be on every state contest/festival required music list.
An essential part of any good instrumental music program is for the students to play a solo with piano accompaniment. Having students play in a small chamber-music setting is a very beneficial exercise toward improving the students overall musicianship. Many states have solo and ensemble festivals where students can play for a judge and receive feedback on their performance. As part of the process of playing a solo with piano, students can improve many aspects of their playing such as tone quality, intonation, technique and ensemble skills. It helps them to overcome any inhibitions about playing alone, which can only have a positive benefit for any student. These solos are different in that they have been composed or arranged with the ability level of the student in mind. We have called on our experience as music educators, composers, conductors and editors to put together a collection of solos that will be useful to the student for multiple years. We feel strongly that these solos are both musically fresh and more indicative of the types of contemporary music that the students will encounter as they develop into their later years in instrumental music. It is our mission to help to improve the overall musicianship of students. We took great care in making sure that there is always a musical sophistication in all of these pieces, even though the technical demands are somewhat limited. Playing with good phrasing is essential at every level, and it is a challenge that we hope all young musicians will strive to achieve. We are confident that this collection of solos will lead you in the right direction. It was a pleasure for us to have the opportunity to put together this collection. We know it will be a useful tool for you for years to come.
