In 1874 Liszt wrote the piece that was to become the first Elegie as a work for solo piano. His second Elegie was published in 1878. Liszt made a version of the piece for cello, piano, harp, and harmonium. He subsequently removed the harp and harmonium parts for the cello and piano version which was published separately. Both elegies are written primarily in tenor clef for the advanced cellist.
